England at the UEFA European Football Championship

This is a record of England's results at the UEFA European Football Championship. The European Championship is one of the major competitive international football tournaments, first played in 1960, whose finals stage has been held every four year, with the 14th staging of the competition occurring in 2012.
The England national football team did not enter the competition until 1964, having declined to participate in 1960. It has competed in the qualifying competition every time since, for a total of 13 tournaments, although has failed to qualify for the finals proper on 5 occasions: 1964 (Spain), 1972 (Belgium), 1976 (Yugoslavia), 1984 (France) and 2008 (Austria/Switzerland). Their best performances are a third-place finish in 1968 (when only four teams competed) and a semi-final on home soil in 1996, when they were defeated by Germany on penalties. The team has reached the quarter-finals on 2 occasions: in 2004 (Portugal) and UEFA Euro 2012 (Poland/Ukraine), losing both on penalties to Portugal and Italy respectively.
The tournament consists of two parts, the qualification phase and the final phase (officially called the ''UEFA European Football Championship Finals''). The qualification phase, which currently take place over the two years preceding the Finals, is used to determine which teams qualify for the Finals. The current format of the Finals involves 16 teams competing for the title, at venues within the host nation (or nations) over a period of three weeks.
England have never won the competition, and they have never made it past the semi-finals. England did, however, win the FIFA World Cup in 1966, defeating West Germany 4–2 in the final at Wembley Stadium. They were the most successful of the "home nations" in the British Home Championship with 54 wins (including 20 shared wins) before the competition was suspended in 1984.
